Gathering the Reference
As has become custom with my travel-based painting, I tend to gather inspiration in situ in the form of photography and small sketches. (I'm not yet one for en plein air painting, and frankly - cannot find the necessary window for "flow state" on trips where my young children trail along - ha!)
I mainly work from memory once back in my Denver-based studio, though printing photos helps jog the memory and help ensure I capture certain details (like, a marking on a leaf, or a combination of colors.)
