My goodness, I love this place. I grew up in Sacramento, CA and Tahoe was our extended backyard. Skiing in the winter. Camping and boating in the summer. What a privilege to return with my own kids this summer. This series attempts to capture the feeling of such a special corner of the globe.
It's as if the Lake is painted - the water transitions from teal to pewter depending on the cloud cover and time of day, and could easily be a painter's palette. The focus of this recent trip was family and kids, but I snapped photos when and where I could. I do think this trip awoke in me a desire to do more travel-based photography and painting.
I did work from photos for this series, but it's a fine line between memory/abstraction and overly representational work. While I stop short of recreating a photographed representation of space, I let the color and elements of the composition work their way into my pieces. The goal is to evoke the memory and feel of a place rather than literal representation.
The Lake Tahoe series is actively growing. What you see here represents the first wave, small and medium canvases exploring the mountain-meets-water landscape in different light conditions. Larger works and paper originals are in development. If you're interested in a specific view or scale, commissions are open.
